[ARCHIVED] What are “Demand Response Services” on The S?

What are Demand Response Services on The S? Dial-A-Ride ticket inserted into fare box.

The S Demand Response Services

Modesto Area Dial-A-Ride (MADAR) and Stanislaus Regional Transit (StaRT) ADA paratransit service, Medivan shuttle, and Dial-A-Ride are now called “The S Demand Response Services.” These are services that require advanced scheduling by the customer and pick up and drop off either at the door or at the curb.

ADA Paratransit

ADA paratransit is required by law for individuals unable to navigate fixed-route bus systems. It typically requires users to be certified as eligible to use the service. Most customer trips made on The S Demand Response Services are for ADA paratransit-qualified riders. The cost is $2.50 per trip. ADA paratransit is provided for those living near fixed-route bus service, but unable to use it due to disability. ADA Paratransit is available wherever The S has fixed-route bus service in Stanislaus County. There are no discounts available for this type of trip. These are the same trips riders would have previously booked on MADAR and StaRT paratransit when they were operating.

Dial-A-Ride

This service is offered only in the towns of Newman, Oakdale, Patterson, and Riverbank.  It is separate service from ADA paratransit which is also available in these communities.   For trips made within each of these four Stanislaus communities: Newman, Oakdale, Patterson, and Riverbank, The S offers a curb-to-curb service (Dial-A-Ride) because there is limited fixed-route bus service in these areas. The fare for this service is $2.50 for the general public and $1.50 discounted fare for seniors aged 65 and older, veterans with proper ID, and individuals with ADA certification.  Dial-A-Ride services operate fewer days and hours each week than paratransit and trips can be denied because it is intended for the general public.
